A working key to four anchor species and the splash-leaf tangle that confuses even experienced growers.
The reference point for the entire genus. Leaves are 5–8 cm, elliptic to ovate, thick and waxy, with a faintly visible midrib and almost no secondary venation showing through. New growth flushes red-bronze before hardening to deep green. If a leaf looks like a generic Hoya, it is probably carnosa or one of its sports — 'Krimson Queen', 'Krimson Princess', 'Compacta'.
