Substrate and potting: think forest floor, not potting mix

Philodendron martianum grows terrestrially in the leaf-litter layer of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. Replicating that means a substrate that holds some moisture but never becomes anaerobic — standard houseplant potting soil alone will compact, exclude oxygen, and rot the roots that do the actual work. A mix of roughly 40% high-quality potting mix, 30% perlite or pumice, 20% orchid bark (medium grade), and 10% worm castings gets close. The castings provide slow-release nutrition without the salt load of synthetic fertilizers; the bark and perlite keep macropores open long-term.

Because 'Fat Boy' doesn't climb, it develops a wider, denser root mass than most philodendrons. Choose a pot that's only slightly larger than the root ball — terrestrial aroids pushed into oversized containers tend to sit in wet media between waterings, which is exactly the condition that triggers petiole rot at the base. Shallow, wide azalea-style pots work well. Unglazed terracotta is useful if your ambient humidity is high; plastic retains moisture longer if your space runs dry.

Drafts from air conditioning vents are more damaging than low ambient temperature because they desiccate leaves and crash local humidity instantly — keep the plant away from HVAC airflow.

Humidity is where many growers lose 'Fat Boy'. The practical floor is 60%; the plant performs noticeably better at 65–75%.
